Rwanda may be a landlocked country without an ocean, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a beach holiday where you can relax. It has a well-kept pearl known as Lake Kivu, located in the Western arm of the Albertine Rift Valley, on the border of Rwanda and Congo.

Lake Kivu in Rwanda

“Scenic’ might be an understatement here; it features rugged shorelines and cliffs, spectacular sandy beaches, and breathtaking islands that offer something for everyone.

Although this beauty can be seen from space while flying over it in a helicopter, the best vantage point belongs to the avid swimmers and beach lovers who visit each year.

An overnight stay in one of the surrounding villas or resorts allows you to fully soak up the calming atmosphere. And it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise. You can surf, kayak, and spot fishing. It is also great for swimming considering Kivu doesn’t have bilharzia, nor does it have any wild animals.

The location is believed to be stratified with huge methane and carbonic dioxide. Considering that the gases pose a potential gas eruption in years to come, the Rwandan Government is extracting the methane gas out of it, and making the most of it to produce electricity.

There are also several islands on the lake to visit, some of which have old-growth forests that host colonies of monkeys, others with beautiful flocks of birds, and others with geothermal attractions, especially hot springs.
