This place offers travellers a great appreciation of everything Rwanda has become. It explains how colonization affected Rwandan society and bred divisions that before didn’t exist between Hutus and Tutsis (ethnic groups).

Kigali Genocide Memorial

It achieves this by giving an in-depth understanding of the devastating Rwandan genocide that brought the country down on its knees in 1994, killing approximately 800,000 people.

During a half-day tour here, you will discover historical events that fueled the horrifying massacre. The site features a museum dedicated to the lives that were lost and a burial ground where 250,000 victims are buried. During your guided, you will watch a short documentary film about events that sparked the tragedy. You will also visit three permanent exhibitions, filled with artifacts (especially weapons used), sacred sculptures, timelines, the colonial history of the country and thought-provoking photographs. There is also a gallery section dedicated to children. It displays the profile of the minors who lost their lives, their favorite toys, food, sports, songs, and extras.

As expected of dark tourism, the experience is emotionally demanding but offers so many lessons.
