Masai Mara’s vastness and varied geographical features are instantly likable. It is ideal for both first-time safari-goers, as well as experienced travelers. It has classic savannah that is as flat as a cake plate.

Mara, hosts the greatest wildlife show on Earth, the wildebeest migration. During this spectacle, 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra journey from Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) into Kenya’s Masai Mara. To make their way, they cross rivers that are infested with monster-sized crocodiles that are always ready to kill. It’s a spectacle we have witnessed lots of times, but always left feeling a little conflicted.

Masai Mara National Game Reserve

The abundance of big cats here is unbelievable! Where else can you stumble upon a full-scale battle over a kill between a pride of lions and a group of over 20 hyenas? Where else can you track leopards and their cubs?

This park has every savannah animal you can dream of within an incredibly short distance; that’s why it has been called the prime wildlife real estate on earth, a truly well-deserved honor!

About the accommodation options, if you want to experience a more authentic, wilder safari experience, our team at Gonja Safaris can book you a stay in one of the private concessions that border the national reserve. They have far fewer lodges and tourist vehicles, and as such they are more private and intimate. But that is only half the story; they are owned by the local Maasai communities and have good populations of wildlife. At the end of the day, it will be a win-win as the local communities benefit from your tourist dollars and you get a more qualitative stay.
