Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeest Migration Experience in Tanzania

Although over 90% of Serengeti is dominated by grassland, the immense landscape still manages to be stunningly diverse. It features rivers, valleys, forests, and granite outcrops rising from the plains. And those views are made even better by the presence of millions of prey and predators; wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle The Serengeti is considered Tanzania’s best park. Big herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephants, black rhinos, buffalo and giraffe, and many antelope species, especially impala, kongoni, eland, and topi. Black-backed and golden jackals are never far, and neither are spotted hyenas.

Nothing beats the thrill of seeing this diverse array stretching to the horizon every June-September as they migrate to Masai Mara in search of fresh grass and water.

This epic sight qualifies Serengeti National Park as among Africa’s most popular destinations. One of the main highlights of the event is the brilliant opportunities for predator sightings, as lots of leopards, cheetahs, and lions follow the herds to hunt. Prepare to see lots of leopards dozing in the tree bough as they way for the heat of the day to calm down.

Hot air balloon safaris are a popular add-on to the experience due to the unmatched bird’s view it offers. Walking safaris can also now be done around Lake Ndutu or the Grumeti River. The experience offers a great sense of freedom in the bush. This can be combined with a stay in authentic bush camps that enhance that wilderness feeling.
